Plant a Word and Watch it Grow!
Walking a Labyrinth is an ancient custom for Prayer, Meditation and Clarity.
It is a sacred healing space designed to return you to your centre, to your deepest heart, then back out into the world.
The building of this Heart is the story of one woman’s healing path and recovery from trauma. It is about life affirming acts of reclamation and regeneration. It shows how the restorative work of the individual can become that which unifies and heals not only the Newton community but also all community.
It takes a village to feed the heart, and it is the heart that nourishes the village. Volunteers from the Newton community helping to lay the foundations for “The Heart of Newton Labyrinth”. Stay tuned for another work party! Save the date Sunday June 11 for opening ceremony and celebration.
Come to the PLOT for a garden tour with our very own Master Gardener and Chartered Herbalist, 10 am Wednesday May 24
Amazing day at the PLOT today! Sunbow appeared in the sky as we laid out the the lines for the soon to be “Heart of Newton Labyrinth”. Newcomer Dory sheared all our sod benches with loving zen care, Sherree Lee sharpened and cleaned tools, Giselle and Zena prepared branches for painting for medicine wheel pots, scarlet runners were planted, much of the soil was moved, and a beautiful bouquet of PLOT radishes was presented! AND FIRST Salad from our own garden greens For PLOT Pot Luck!!! Oh, and the sun was shining!!!
The PLOT visits Riley Park Community Garden in Vancouver to share ideas on the concept of “Sharing Gardens”. Gratitude to Riley Garden for the warm hospitality and lovely feast. Grandma Amy of the PLOT Newton Medicine Wheel explains the teachings of the Medicine Wheel as Riley Garden explores the idea of bringing these teachings into their own garden.
MOTHER’S DAY AT THE PLOT! Snippets of sunshine, a PLOT Pansy and Aloe Vera give away for local Moms, Sue from KPU coming to learn more about the PLOT for her project, tea and treats and the Nepalese walking yoga group planting seeds into the mother earth brought a warmth of heart that was infectious.
Easter Sunday at the PLOT came complemented with coloured eggs delivered with care by PLOT nieghbours, the joy of planting baby vegetable starts, feasting together and hunting for Easter Treats.
Despite the pouring rain and cool weather several PLOT volunteers arrived to prepare for the Spring Equinox.
Claudia Brown Bear Woman, who helps facilitate Sweat Lodge at the Cwenen-gitel Aboriginal Centre in Surrey, arrived as things were being set up and gifted us with a sage smudge, then offered up a traditional healing Bear Song in blessing for the land and the people.
Grandma Amy – Manchus S’Kwao – Earthworm Woman, arrived wrapped in a beautiful West Coast style button blanket that she had made. People from the community circled around, filling all the spaces under the tent and overflowing out under umbrellas to help celebrate the first anniversary of the Newton Medicine Wheel.
Grandma Amy and another singer drummer Janeh began the Ceremony with the “Seven Direction Song” by Grandma Harris of North Vancouver. As the ceremony continued Grandma Amy and the Medicine Wheel team shared their words acknowledging the four cardinal directions of the wheel and the four related major elements that make up the fabric of life, Earth, Fire, Water and Air.
Telling stories, drumming and singing Grandma Amy was asked several times if she was too cold and wanting to leave. Each time her response was no, no, no I am good and she would launch into another wonderful life experience or teaching story.
After the Equinox Celebration and abundant feasting, the rain stopped. About half a dozen of the garden volunteers set about working on the garden well into the late afternoon, with shovels flying and wheelbarrows rolling, another set of beds was readied for planting.
